> Sweet potato season is rapidly approaching, both for gleaning as well as
> for delivery of produce.
> Yam Jam – comes in two parts. The big event will be at Jason Brown’s farm
> on Friday (Oct. 5 & Oct. 6). Other gleaning will occur on 4 other
> Saturdays (Sept. 29, Oct. 12, 19 & 26). I am attaching two flyers.
> If you plan to be there in person, it is important to register for Yam
> Jam. This is a separate registration than for gleaning. You can register
> Tri Area Ministry has offered to use their truck to deliver to other
> pantries on the days with high volume. We’ll use a fleet of pick-ups &
> cars on the other days.
> *Oct. 5-6 at Jason Brown’s farm.*
> o The expectation is that as many pantries will bring their own volunteers
> to harvest; this is not gleaning. Jason will have tilled the field.
> Pantries can pick up either day. Harvesting starts at 8 am & those
> pantries bringing their own volunteers will be checked out first.
> o This is the perfect opportunity to get your Youth Groups out to the
> fields, especially on Saturday. Jason has added fun activities for kids
> that will last until around 3 pm including face painting, a trolley farm
> tour & an opportunity to meet barnyard animals.
> *The other days of Yam Jam*
> o Gleaning will occur on Sept. 29, Oct. 12, 19 & 26…these are all
> Saturdays. Can use volunteers to help bag & deliver.
> o We won’t know which location in Wake, Johnston or Harnett County until a
> couple of days before the events. You’ll get a pre-notice of where if I
> do. Last year, we gleaned at 3 farms in Willow Grove which is about 45
> minutes from Wake Forest.
> *Deliveries of Sweet Potatoes to Pantries*
> o The Wake Forest Area Hunger Ministry will be happy to deliver to
> pantries who cannot be there in person. Let’s take them in sequence:
> *1. Saturday, Sept. 29.* Priority will be to pantries open that morning
> (New Bethel & Richland Creek). Patricia & David – please let me know if
> you can bag & pick up or whether we should plan to deliver. Depending on
> the number of volunteers & vehicles, we should be able to deliver
> quantities to the other pantries open on Sunday, Monday & Tuesday. If you
> are open then, please email me your requirements.
> *2. Jason Brown’s farm*. Please let me know which day you plan to be
> there with volunteers if possible. Friday is the better day as it won’t be
> as crowded. If you cannot be there on Friday or Saturday, please let me
> know and we’ll arrange delivery.
> *3. Oct. 13, 20 & 27.* Will be back in touch when we know the
> specifics. If the events are deep in Johnston or Harnett county, it will
> limit our ability to deliver to pantries on the same day.
> Please let me know what questions you have.
